Wordless Wednesday: Colchester Castle, county gaol
Many Tudor Essex men and women spent their final days in terrible conditions in this prison including many poor souls from Great Dunmow.
- Protestant martyr, Thomas Bowyer, was thrown in here in 1556 before being taken to prison in London. Read his story here: The weaver of Great Dunmow.
- Alice Prestmary, witch of Great Dunmow, died here of gaol fever on 7 May 1567. Read her story here: Witchcraft in Tudor Great Dunmow.

Can you help me please ? My name is Wesley Cushing and my relations still have a shop in the high street,Mann’s music. My grandfather had a shop in the high street no 95 I believe.
He was a scale maker and my mother and her sister grew up there.
I would love to be able to find some photos of that part of the High street..
If you have any suggestions where I could obtain any I would be very pleased.
Thanks a lot,
Regards,
Wesley Cushing
